PokerStars’ Play Money Chips Move

Having paid out their US players in the wake of the Black Friday indictments,
PokerStars have made it clear that they had every intention to return to the US market sometime. Before they could begin offering full real-money games to US players though, they had to explore and eventually settle for alternative ways to make money off US-based online poker players. One such option was to allow US players to purchase play money chips for real money at the site. Even though some of the
poker news portals are only now hailing the move, the option has been around since early 2013.
Through the PokerStars Facebook app, players can hit the cash games, the SNG and the MTT tables and even the Zoom Poker ones.
The prices for the play-money chips are reasonable, although – given how play money games differ so much from the real money ones – some players will certainly find them overblown.
For $1.99, one can purchase a 350k batch of play-money chips. For $9.99, a much more substantial batch of 2 million play money chips can be purchased. By far the most popular package seems to be the $24.99 one though, which comes with 7.5 million chips. The best value is delivered by $199.99 package, which gives players 165 million chips. The question is whether or not spending any real money on play money action makes any kind of sense. Play money tables can be extremely frustrating and it is a generally accepted truth that they don’t do much in the way of developing one’s poker skills for the real money tables either.
According to some though, the nosebleed stakes play money tables can in fact feature pretty competitive and strategically sound action. For those who cannot play for real money, these tables do therefore represent a decent and fun alternative.
