On Thursday, the 2013 edition of the World Series of Poker kicked off with the traditional $500 Casino Employees event. The first open event of the Series got going as well: 481 players bellied up to the tables of the $5k NL Holdem event, #1 of this year’s Series, and it’s needless to say that quite a few “name” pros joined the action.
PokerStars pro Daniel Negreanu was among the starters, together with Jonathan Duhamel, Antonio Esfandiari and Phil Ivey. Several of the high profile pros talked to reporters following the first two levels of the day and they chimed in on their expectations in regards to the
2013 WSOP.
PokerStars’ Jake Cody was playing too and he said he was looking forward to playing in as many WSOP 2013 events as possible, although he obviously won’t be able to play in all 62 of them. He also expressed hope that there would be more participants in the various WSOP events now than last year. Cody already has a bracelet to his name, which he won back in 2011 in the $25k
NL Holdem Heads-Up Championship.
Matt Salsberg on the other hand said that he was looking forward to playing in all the NL events, but he also put it forth that he didn’t have particularly lofty expectations: all he hoped for was to play great poker and to go as deep as possible in as many events as possible.
Antonio Esfandiari, the winner of last year’s Big One for One Drop, who has recently secured a sponsorship deal with Nevada’s first fully legal online poker operator, said that he was looking forward to take down a big score yet again. Mostly however he was just looking to play in all the No Limit events and to “punish” people as much as possible.
