Sheldon Adelson Starts Anti-Online Gaming Crusade

Indeed, if there were one only person out there fit to parade around as an anti-online gaming crusader, it would have to be billionaire and casino mogul Sheldon Adelson: he has live casino interests to protect, he is anchored in the past seemingly invested in fighting progress every possible way, and he is really-really concerned about the poor and the downtrodden…really. When it comes to desperately clinging on to the past instead of trying to keep up with progress, there are many like Adelson out there, but unlike most of these people, Adelson has the financial means at his disposal to try to do something about it. In the end, he will obviously be steamrolled by progress together with his billions, but that doesn’t prevent him from putting up what he sees as a just fight.

Adelson is the very definition of the casino mogul: he is the Las Vegas Sands Corp. Chairman and CEO, and he owns and runs a number of casinos/resorts in Las Vegas (like The Venetian Resort Hotel and Casino and the Palazzo Resort), as well as in Macau and Singapore. He is now planning a massive nation-wide offensive against online poker and online gambling in 2014, and to that end, he’s already begun hiring lobbyists and public relations experts, not only in Washington but in various state capitals as well. The Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling is the name of an advocacy group he’s planning to launch early next year.
Stopping online gambling has apparently turned into something of an obsession for the 80-year old billionaire, who talks about it every day with his advisors. The bottom line is probably that as long as he has the money to battle his windmills, he will always have people who will buy into his views and stand by his side.
