The third
poker tournament of the 2010 Aussie Millions attracted a field of only 90 registrants. In a mere two days of action, that field played down to the winner. Due to the small number of participants and the relatively small buy-in (we’re talking about a $1,100 Limit
Holdem event) Simon Morris, the winner, only took home a AUD 25,650 prize which is not exactly impressive for a live poker tournament of Aussie Millions caliber.
Morris started the final day in the chip lead and pretty soon he extended it. By the time the final table was reached, he held a 122,000 chip stack while none of his opponents had more than half that. Under those circumstances, there was little the other guys could do to stop Morris’ march to victory.
The most noteworthy challenge came from David Steicke, who had begun the day as one of the short stacks with only 33,000 chips. As the battle wore on though, Steicke began to rise through the ranks. There were only 6 players left in the game when a decisive confrontation between him and the eventual winner occurred.
On a flop of 10d,2s,10h, Morris took control of the action with a 5,000 chip bet. Steicke called it and the two went on to see an 8d land on the turn. Morris fired out a $10,000 bet this time and Steicke called it. The 6h on the river decided the victor: Morris’ 9d,5d had missed the flush and Steicke’s A,K gave him the pot.
Steicke’s joy proved to be short lived though. He dropped a few pots in quick succession to Jan Suchanek and Simon Morris. Soon, he found himself a short-stack again, with his back against the wall. Steicke’s final hand was one against Morris, in which his 10,9o went up against Morris’ K,Jo. The board landed 4 spades, among them a J to give Morris a pair and to send Steicke to the rail for good. Steicke picked up AUD 9,000 for his 4th place finish.
From that point on, Morris had no more serious obstacles to overcome. He eliminated everyone and didn’t lose a single big pot heads-up. Steve Krmpotic ended up in second place, followed by Jan Suchanek in 3rd.
