Some 2014 Poker Predictions

With the Old Year behind us, and with a number of retrospectives now in the archives, it is finally time to leave the past be – lessons learned of course – and to take a look into the future, or rather, into what the future could possibly hold. Here’s our small list of 2014 poker predictions.
To start things off, we’re going to play the optimist and say that at least one other US state (the first two being Nevada and New Jersey in this respect) will
legalize online poker.
The States most likely to pursue the path of legalization are California and Pennsylvania (where certain forms of online gambling are indeed already legal) but – provided New Jersey will give birth to a major success-story in this respect – other jurisdictions may decide to follow in the footsteps of the Garden State. Of course, we realize that the legalization process is a lengthy one and that nothing palpable has yet been done in any of the above said states towards legalization, but if New Jersey manages to make serious money off its online poker, things may speed up more quickly than one may now anticipate.
Our second prediction is that 2014 will be Russia’s year at the
WSOP, kind of like 2013 turned out to be Canada’s year. Of course, it would be foolish to prophesize that Russians will walk away with 10 bracelets, like the Canadians did last year, but holding them capable of capturing at least 3 is a rather reasonable viewpoint.
To put this prediction into perspective: Russia’s first WSOP bracelet came as late as 2007, when Alex Kravchenko won a $1.5k Omaha 8 or better event. The total for Russia thus far is 9, and almost half of that jewelry came courtesy of two players: Vitaly Lunkin (who won 2) and Viacheslav Zhukov (also responsible for 2).
