Some New Jersey Residents Won’t be Able to Gamble Online

Technology buffs will tell you that no complex online system has even been rolled out without glitches, and it now looks like New Jersey’s recently legalized online gaming will fit that trend spot-on. New Jersey lawmakers in general and the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement in particular, have been extremely keen on getting this right from the get-go, so keen in fact, that they may have overshot their goal here and there. While it is indeed important to make sure that the Nation’s second state to fully legalize online poker and gambling does it right and that none of the people who are supposed to be excluded gain access to the state’s online gaming offering, the DGE will find it difficult to make its case to those who live near the state borders and who – apparently – won’t be able to take part in the games for now.

The reason is a technical one. In order to prevent people from outside the Garden State from playing, “digital fences” will have to be erected, and whenever something like that is done, it is pretty much guaranteed that some of the people will get stuck on the wrong side of those fences, even if they’re technically living in the right jurisdiction.
DGE Director David Rebuck said that for some of the people living close to the state’s borders, there will simply not be enough verification available to attest that they are indeed inside the state, even if they are.
The DGE has already warned residents looking to take advantage of the state’s legalized online gaming market to move away from the proximity of the borders.

Online gaming in the Garden State is set to go through a trial period beginning with November 21. The “hard-launch” is set for November 26.
