Some of the Best Moments of the 2013 WSOP

As the WSOP’s Main Event is slowly but surely playing through its last few stages, a better time for a retrospective of the most entertaining and most surprising moments of the
2013 WSOP has never existed.
Obviously, there wasn’t a bigger and more pleasant surprise than Dana Castaneda and Loni Harwood’s bracelet performances who became the first women – other than Vanessa Selbst – in 7 years to win an open WSOP event. For those who have been living under a rock for the last few weeks: Castaneda won Event #54 of the 2013 WSOP, a $1k
NL Holdem tournament, while Loni Harwood survived a starting field of 2,541 players to win Event #60, a $1.5k NL Holdem affair. She took down a $609k prize for that accomplishment, but it wasn’t the only noteworthy achievement of the summer for her: she finished 6th in Event #31, a $1.5k PLO one, and she made it all the way to 4th place in Event #53, another $1.5k NL Holdem tournament.
Indeed, the fact that female players have won a couple of open events shouldn’t really be a surprise, but rather the norm, given the size and the quality of the female competition out there. For some reason however, the ladies haven’t really been enjoying the apparently deserved level of success.
Another pleasant surprise of the 2013 WSOP was the revival of Erick Lindgren’s poker career. Lindgren, heavily involved in the Full Tilt Poker scandal, quietly faded into the background after Black Friday, but this year’s Series have brought the best out of him.
Following a second place effort in the $25k WPT World Championship event, which earned him $605k, he won Event #32 of the 2013 WSOP, a $5k NL Holdem 6-handed affair, picking up a $606k prize and a gold bracelet.
