Steve O'Dwyer Misses Out on EPT PoY

By any sound logic, Steve O'Dwyer was the most successful player of the 12th season of the European Poker Tour. He had the wins, the final table presences and the profits needed to be crowned Player of the Year, yet someone else ended up walking away with the title. That someone else was Mike "Timex" McDonald, who beat O'Dwyer in the home stretch by a mere 1(one) point. The completion of the Monte Carlo Grand Final meant the end of the PoY race too, and the drawing of the line, which led to this rather peculiar outcome.
What were the accomplishments that O'Dwyer had racked up through the season though, and how come that the race came down to a one-point difference in the end? It turns out that O'Dwyer made some $2.7 million in this EPT season, an accomplishment by virtue of which alone, he should've been appointed PoY without any further ado.

That money landed in O'Dwyer's pockets in rather spectacular fashion too: he made no fewer than 7 final tables for it, winning a €10.2k event and two Super High rollers. How exactly did McDonald catch up with him score-wise then? According to the scoring system of the GPI (Global Poker Index) McDonald's 7th place finish in the Grand Final's last event, was worth some 243.20 points, over 11 points more than O'Dwyer's 9th place finish in the €50k Super High Roller of the same event.
When putting both players' EPT 12 runs under the looking glass, it becomes clear that the only category in which McDonald bested his PoY rival was that of the number of cashes registered.
