The Best Poker Stories of 2012 – Gaelle Baumann and Elisabeth Hille Make Deep WSOP Main Event Runs

Believe it or not, since 1995, no woman has made a
WSOP Main Event final table. At the beginning of Day 7 of this year’s Big Dance, it looked like all that could change though. While most of the superstars like Phil Ivey and Michael Mizrachi had been sent to the side-lines long ago, two women, Gaelle Baumann and Elisabeth Hille were still alive and sitting on more than decent stacks. The last lady to make a WSOP Main Event final table was Barbara Enright, who took home $114.1k for her 5th place finish.
With the final table drawing near, Hille and Baumann were obviously both hoping not only to equal but possibly to beat Enright’s record.
Another honor which was up for grabs at the beginning of day 7 was the “Last Woman Standing” one, but it didn’t seem to garner any interest from either of the two remaining women. They both had their eyes on the prize, unfortunately, none of them managed to make the final stretch of the event after all. The first to go was Hille, who got sent to the rail in 11th place.
She had failed to get anything going though the day and by the time the last 13 was reached, her stack was a short one. She lost her tournament life at the end of a coin flip: she got her last chips into the middle on an A,Qo against Andras Koroknai’s pocket 7s. The pocket 7s held and Hille was out.
The next player to go, in 10th place, was Gaelle Baumann. She had an A,9o against Koroknai’s A,Jo. The stronger starting hand once again prevailed and Koroknai thus single handedly managed to defend Enright’s 1995 record.
