The Best Poker Stories of 2012 – Marvin Rettenmaier’s Run

A year ago, there was much talk of Erik Seidel’s incredible 2011 run, which saw the poker pro take home $6.5 million. While that number wasn’t equaled by anyone this year, there’s plenty to talk about still. The young guns took over from the older generation this year as Dan Smith and Marvin Rettenmaier spearheaded the assault. None of these two players managed to accumulate more than $3.8 million in profits, but that doesn’t take anything away from their outstanding exploits.
Rettenmaier for instance won two WPT events back-to-back and much, much more. Interestingly enough, unlike Erik Seidel last year, Rettenmaier didn’t quite start his year off on the right foot. Three months had gone by before he got anything major going. During those three months, his top accomplishment was an 8th place finish in an Aussie Millions side event, which earned him $17.4k. Once he got past that initial dry-spell though, things took a sudden turn for the much better for him.
His first major accomplishment for the year was a 5th place finish in the €9.5k high roller of the WPT’s Vienna stop, which saw him pocket €34.1k. It only took him a week to make another deep run: he finished 3rd in the
EPT Berlin’s €10k NL Holdem 8-max Re-Entry event, taking down his first 6-figure cash of the year. Another week later, he won the €2k NL Holdem event of the EPT’s Monte Carlo Grand Final.
His accomplishments didn’t go unnoticed. He earned a
PartyPoker sponsorship in April. He rewarded the site’s trust in him by winning the WPT’s $25k Championship Event at the Bellagio, a feat which earned him close to $1.2 million.
His second WPT win of the year came in the Merit Cyprus Classic’s $4k Main Event.
