One of the most accurate measures of a poker player’s success over a one-year period is his year-end balance of course. While organizations such as the GPI use intricate algorithms to ranks players by performance, for a layman, just taking a look at how much money a player brought in or lost is a good-enough indicator of who’s hot and who’s not.
Well, last year, no one came hotter than Germany’s Niklas Heinecker, who won some $6.19 million at the high stakes online poker tables, registering an astonishing profit/hand of $94.4. The interesting thing is that the year didn’t even start off particularly well for the German: during January, February and March, he didn’t log any sort of meaningful activity. Then in April, he dropped $225.3k. He corrected that in May, when he finished above the red line by $464.6k. From there on out, every month, he finished with a considerable profit, except for July, when he lost some $34.8k.
By August, Heinecker was over the $2 million mark, and by December, he had the $6 million mark left in his rearview mirror as well.
The second biggest cash game winner was Ben Tollerene, who took down $2.99 million. Third place went to Alex Millar, who finished with a little more than $2 million.
Hac Dang and Patrik Antonius made the biggest winners’ list as well.

By far the biggest online cash game loser of the year was Gus Hansen. The Great Dane dropped some $8.46 million, having logged 1,627 sessions totaling 171,743 hands for a staggering $49.27 loss per hand. MalACEsia was the second biggest loser, with $3.77 million.
Interestingly, Phil Ivey made the losers’ list too, although he “only” dropped $2.44 million. Other “name” players on the list of shame were Ben Sulsky and Scott Seiver.
Full Tilt Poker has been the top destination for high stakes online cash games since its re-launch.
