The Colossus Kicks off in Style

The Colossus event of the
2015 WSOP kicked off earlier today with quite a bit of fanfare and anticipation. Many of the contestants were dressed up as roman warriors, looking to take this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity head-on. Despite the monster starting-field, everything seemed to work smoothly during the early going, as the table-talk centered mostly around the eventual size of the starting field, which would not be learned until the official closing of registration on Saturday.
Scores of pros saw action on the first day of the Colossus, among them Joe Kuether, Dennis Philips and 2004 WSOP Main Event champion and ex-PokerStars pro Greg Raymer, who has been tearing up the WSOP circuit lately. Although the Rio was cramped, Raymer seemed to enjoy the action, pointing it out that the atmosphere was a lot like that of the Main Event. The obvious difference was though that while during the Main Event, the fans are usually on the rail, looking in, this time around, they were at the tables, playing away.

Some of the recreational players were obviously nervous and antsy with excitement, but the professionals all seemed focused and in their element. The organizers have indeed done everything to accommodate the unprecedented crowds: news broke on Thursday, that the late starting flights of both of the Day 1 flights (Friday and Saturday), would be pushed back to 7PM. In order to somehow get the field to play down to a manageable size for Day 2, an additional level was also introduced for both Friday and Saturday, so players would now log a total of 11 levels instead of the originally scheduled 10.
