The GPI’s Player of the Decade is: Daniel Negreanu

For the last week or so, the GPI’s Eric Danis has been busy keeping the cogs and gears of a massive and infinitely complicated algorithm in motion, aimed at determining the best poker player of the last decade, and on Friday, the last two players on the countdown-list, the runner-up and the winner, were finally revealed. Neither name came as a surprise for those who know a thing or two about poker: the runner-up was Erik Seidel, while the winner, and the Player of the Decade was PokerStars’ own Daniel Negreanu.

Erik Seidel is definitely one of the players with lots victories under his belt, and every poker fan will admit that. The interesting thing was though that of his 27 career wins, only 12 came during the decade looked at for determining the PoD. Despite that, of the $19.27 million that he pocketed through his career, more than $12 million came from the last decade, so he was indeed pretty solid in that respect. His biggest haul, a $2.47 million monster, came at the Aussie Millions’ $250k Super High Roller, in January, 2011.
In addition to all the above mentioned money, Seidel also has 8 WSOP bracelets to his name.

Daniel Negreanu is a self-proclaimed stats-nut, so with that in mind, we’re quite certain he’s in 7th heaven now that he’s been named the best of the last 10 years. With a mind-bogglingly impressive 2013 run behind him, Kid Poker was indeed a prime candidate from the get-go for the PoD honors.
Negreanu has some $19.54 million to his name in tournament profits, which makes him third on the all-time money list. In the first year of his last decade, Negreanu set a personal record with some $4.46 million in profits. His last year of that period was a monster one too: he took down $3.2 million.
