The Poker Grapevine – 2012 British Poker Awards

The British Poker Awards, held in London, represent the pinnacle of recognition for the most active and successful poker and online poker players in Britain each year. This year, there was little doubt about who would walk away with the most awards from the event: Sam Trickett has indeed had quite a 2011. He scored no fewer than 3 7-figure hauls in various tournaments and he took part in some of the toughest cash games ever in Macau, where he took down quite handsome profits too, playing against some of the best cash game players in the world.

The players Trickett competed against for the above said awards were quite an illustrious bunch too: Chris Moorman ended up rewarded with the ‘Best Online Player’ title, while Vanessa Selbst took the ‘Best International Player’ award. As for Trickett, he ended up scooping the ‘Player of the Year’ title, together with the ‘Best Cash Player’ and ‘Best Tournament Player’ awards.
Besides the above said players, Liv Boeree was honored as well: she was awarded the ‘Poker Personality of the Year’ title. As far as the online poker world is concerned, the Hendon Mob picked up the ‘Best Poker Forum’ award. Craig McCorkell was considered to be the ‘Breakthrough Player of the Year’.

In other news: Antonio Esfandiari was Howard Stern’s guest in the Howard Stern Show on Tuesday. Esfandiari offered an insight into his life as a high stakes poker player through the interview, singling out his Big One for One Drop win as the peak of his poker playing career. Antonio also covered his childhood, saying that he had always been the ‘unpopular’ kid and that his father had never really approved of his gambling ways or of his decision to become a magician. Esfandiari didn’t miss the opportunity to make the case for poker as a game of skill rather than one of chance, something which seemed to intrigue Stern quite a bit.
