The Poker Grapevine – Cantu Gets Even

Brandon Cantu went on quite a tirade following the WSOPE’s $10k Mixed Max event, the heads-up finish of which got postponed at a most inopportune moment for him, and which he ended up losing to Jonathan Aguiar. Back then, Cantu claimed that WSOP officials had conspired against him and that they had basically decided to give to bracelet to Aguiar on a silver platter doing whatever they could to create difficulties for him. He went even further, and at the end of his rant, he challenged Aguiar to a re-match, the stake of which would be the difference between 1st and 2nd in the above said WSOPE event. Aguiar accepted the challenge, and the two players bellied up to one of the tables of the Aria Poker Room on Wednesday, for a $130k heads-up match. There were several professional players in attendance, and indeed, Cantu managed to get the better of his opponent this time, exacting what he no doubt considers some pretty sweet revenge.

The heads-up match was by all means a pretty bizarre affair. For starters, Cantu didn’t want to let Aguiar wear his head-phones. Eventually, the two agreed on Aguiar listening in with one ear, and leaving the other phone-less, to be able to hear his opponent’s “whining” - as the young pro wisely punctuated in a tweet.
Aguiar had the initial advantage, but in the end Cantu stormed back and won. The final hand of the bout saw Cantu’s pocket 6s triumph over his opponent’s pocket 5s.
Aguiar seemed quite disgusted with the whole affair from the get-go, but Cantu was overjoyed as he tweeted that he had just learned that crying and complaining did seem to work in poker.
Aguiar only had about 18k of his own money invested in the match.
