The Poker Grapevine – Hansen Winning Big at Backgammon

Week after week, it seems like it’s been years now that we’ve been reporting about the large sums of money Gus Hansen drops at the nosebleed stakes online poker tables at Full Tilt Poker. Indeed, even as you’re reading this, the Great Dane is well positioned to clinch the biggest online cash game loser of the year title, despite the fact that he just logged a winning session or two the other week.
People may have grown de-sensitized and used to the fact that Hansen loses and he loses big all the time, and now it’s become quite natural to hear about him dropping $500k here and $1 million there. For us, the question has always been: where does he get the money he then takes to the virtual green felt and burns up? This time, we may have been given a clue about (one of) the Great Dane’s source(s) of revenue. It’s widely known fact that Hansen is a great backgammon player and that he’d played professionally in the past. Well, that would explain why he’s so keen on giving backgammon precedence over
poker and online poker.
According to an interview he granted to a major online poker portal a while ago, Hansen opted to stay away from the tables of the second day of an EPT High Roller despite having a large stack, because he had apparently found something better to do: he was playing backgammon in his poker room, and the session ended with him winning about $2.5 million.
Likewise, this year, he failed to show up for the second day of the
WSOP’s Main Event, because he was playing Open-Face Chinese poker, together with Tom Dwan, and he ended up a big winner in that game too.
The bottom line: Hansen is obviously making more than enough money to absorb his impressive losses, although that still doesn’t solve the problem of the profitability of his online poker game.
