The Poker Grapevine – Ivey Dominating 2012 WSOP

Phil Ivey has had his fair share of problems (some personal, some otherwise) in recent years, and these problems have definitely taken a toll on his green felt performance. Thus far though, it appears that 2012 is the year when he will finally get his act back together. He has put together a formidable run so far in this year’s Series, finishing 7th in event #15 and then barely missing out on a bracelet in event #16, where Andy Frankenberger got the better of him. His year hasn’t been a bad one at all thus far either: he started things off with a win in the Aussie Millions Poker Championship $250k Challenge, a move which netted him around $2 million. He did well in the Aussie Millions Main Event too, where he finished 12th. While his Aussie Millions antics weren’t enough to earn some attention from the Global Poker Index, his latest WSOP exploits certainly earned him a spot in the limelight. Jonathan Duhamel has been ruling the GPI’s Player of the Year index with an iron fist for several weeks, but he can no longer take his top spot for granted, not with a player of Ivey’s caliber breathing down his neck.
His WSOP cashes have propelled Ivey up a massive 110 positions in the GPI rankings, straight into the top 10.

In other news: the impending legalization and regulation of online gambling and online poker has all the major land-based Las Vegas gambling interests desperately looking to secure meaningful online partnerships. The latest such news involved Bally Technologies and Aristocrat Technologies. The two companies have apparently reached an agreement with Shuffle Master regarding the creation of a real money online gaming platform. Those who know their online poker know that Shuffle Master is the company behind Ongame. The company has acquired Ongame from bwin.party this March, quite possibly with the very goal of expanding into the US online poker market.
