The
on line poker world has indeed been changed quite a bit by the Black Friday events and the various ordeals which followed. That would explain why no one took Daniel Cates up on his heads-up challenge: the days of such extravagant online poker showboating are quite probably well and truly over. Given the fact that he couldn’t find an online opponent, Cates will host a cash game instead in Prague this month, a game that is streamed on several poker media outlets. Cates takes on Luke Schwartz, Eoghan O’Dea and businessman Jan Barta in a cash game featuring €100/€200 blinds and a minimum buy-in of €10k.
The Cates challenge was supposed to feature heads-up games with €200/€400 blinds and a minimum buy-in of €100k. The organizers had tried all sorts of different marketing tactics to generate interest, including the introduction of the World Poker Heavyweight Championship belt, which was supposed to be given to the winner of the challenge. Nothing materialized though, as some of the top pros even slammed the event as a bad idea.
In other news: PokerStars’ world record attempt was crowned with success the other day. The $1 buy-in event drew a starting field of 200,000 players shattering the previous record, also set by PokerStars. The cap was reached well before the event started. The record was made official by Guinness World Records Adjudicator Gaz Deaves.
The event saw a 3-way deal at the top. The eventual winner was sokoluk1991 of Russia, who collected $40.25k for his efforts. Second place went to Estonia’s Kaitz20, who took home $34k. King-2-Z from the UK finished 3rd, for a $25.7k reward.
The World Record event marked the official start of PokerStars’ 10th anniversary celebrations.
In still other news: German poker pro Fabian Quoss won the GUKPT’s Grand Final. He zoomed past a talented field to take down the £138.7k top prize. Quoss defeated Jake Cody heads-up.
