The Poker Grapevine – Likely WSOP Main Event Attendance

So many peculiar events of bigger and smaller magnitude had shaken the online and live poker world before the 2011 WSOP began, that predicting the number of players who are likely to attend the various events has become downright impossible. The Main Event is no exception, and as the crown jewel of the Series, it is the one generating the most speculation. Poker players are notorious side-bettors, and thus the likely player turn-out for the Big Dance already has official odds. According to the bookie, the worst case scenario is 4k players or less, which carries 4/1 odds. A turn-out of 5k-5.5k is considered the most likely: it carries 2/1 odds.
Extreme optimists may also bet on more than 7k players showing up. In this case they stand to win 8 dollars for every single one that they wager.
According to Tony G, the number to go with is 3,999. Guoga certainly knows a thing or two about poker, but whether or not predicting starting field sizes has anything to do with the actual game is anyone’s guess.

In other poker news: Annie Duke’s book, titled “Decide to Play Great Poker” has been released today, so those who are interested can order a physical copy of it through Amazon. In anticipation of the release, Duke had published several excerpts from the book on her website.

In still other news: the fact that that the Black Friday events as well as the Black Monday ones have taken a heavy toll on the online poker industry is not exactly a secret. Operations have been put out of business. Others were forced to rethink their whole approach to online poker. Victory Poker used to be an online poker room before the Black Friday meltdown. In an attempt to keep the site going, its owners have turned it into a Cake Poker affiliate, and they aim to begin publishing poker strategy articles and poker videos.
