The Poker Grapevine - Macau High Stakes Challenge

High rollers have grown extremely popular lately, as more and more well-bankrolled pros realize the potential in these generously prize-pooled events. Those savvy enough can take down the equivalent of a big WSOP side event win by besting only a handful of players instead of battling their way through hundreds or thousands of them.

With that in mind it is understandable why the cream of the crop of the poker world has flocked to Macau to take part in the Macau High Stakes Challenge, an event rumored to be the richest one of the year. The event features a HKD$2 million buy-in, which is the equivalent of $250k. Those who bust out early and feel like they deserve to give it another go can buy in for $250k again. Although the exact prize-pool of the Macau High Stakes Challenge is not yet known, organizers expect the eventual winner to take home at least $5 million. The event is a high-rolling perfect storm indeed: the buy-in is massive but not way over the top like that of the Big One for One Drop. The event takes place in Macau where there hasn’t been a shortage of nosebleed stakes players for years now. Last, but definitely not least, there’s said to be a lot of value in the event, mostly generated by the wealthy Chinese businessmen who are likely to join the hostilities.

The action in the Macau High Stakes Challenge kicks off on August 31, at the Poker King Club at the StarWorld Hotel and Casino. Word has it that 80 players have already registered with many more to hopefully come. Phil Ivey, Erik Seidel, Gus Hansen, Johnny Chan and Joe Hachem will all play apparently.
The winner’s share of the loot will definitely be the biggest first place of the year, after the WSOP’s Main Event and the Big One for One Drop of course.
