The Poker Grapevine – Mike Sexton Registers for Big One for One Drop

The $1 million Big One for One Drop has already generated more buzz than all the other WSOP events combined (including the Big Dance) and it hasn’t even kicked off yet. A couple of days ago, WPT host and PartyPoker in-house pro Mike Sexton has announced that he too would take part in the event which he called the ‘bucket list of all bucket lists’ for serious poker players.
Sexton has thus far accumulated $4.2 million in career tournament profits and he says there’s more than enough value in the Big One for One Drop. Only last week, organizers have announced 12 players who joined the ranks of the Big One for One Drop starting field, but since then, several other high-profile pros have announced their intentions to play. The event is capped at 48 players, and by some accounts, that cap may already have been reached. Besides Sexton, Phil Hellmuth (now the proud possessor of 12 WSOP bracelets) has also made it clear he wanted to play. Whether the organizers will extend the cap or whether some of the ‘name’ players who want to play will be locked out of the biggest live poker event ever, remains to be seen.

In other news: the legal efforts undertaken by Nevada lawmakers to regulate online gambling and online poker within their state have definitely paid off. Some of the top online gambling companies are lining up for licenses and some of the biggest land-based gambling interests straight off the Strip are also buying into the hype. The two latest companies which have applied for a Nevada license are the Wynn Resorts and Playtech. There are currently 30 companies on the list of potential licensees, among them some of the biggest Vegas casinos and their online partners. Wynn had had a partnership with PokerStars before the latter withdrew from the US market. They are now reportedly in talks with Zynga regarding a similar partnership.
