The Poker Grapevine – More Women Gambling Online in the UK

Despite the many legally adverse moves that online poker and online gambling have had to deal with the last few years, it appears that Internet based wagering is slowly but surely rolling ahead and conquering new markets. According to a report by the Daily Mail, in the UK, the number of women who take to the Internet regularly to gamble online or to play online poker, has skyrocketed lately. Apparently, one third more women are now drawn to the online tables, whether it's chance-based casino like games or skill-based poker and backgammon kind of games that were talking about. Exactly what fuels the said surge in female customers isn't quite clear yet, although experts believe that the abundance of television-based commercials promoting online poker and online gambling in the United Kingdom may be behind the development.
Such television-based advertising regarding Internet gambling had been under a ban in the country, but the ban has been lifted in 2007.

The same experts who were responsible with the above said survey were also quick to ring an alarm bell regarding the increased risk for problem gambling in the country. According to the same sources, around 1 million people will become problem gamblers in the near future, because of how the Internet allows them to wager without having to deal with the social stigma that usually comes with such activity in real life. Many have pointed to the fact that problem gambling may develop into a sort of pandemic which will only be comparable to alcoholism in magnitude. In order to prevent gambling problems from escalating, experts have already recommended that a series of legal steps be taken to correct the current state of affairs. The proposed measures would target the aggressive promotion of gambling to underage persons.
