The Poker Grapevine – Negreanu’s First Major Online Success

Several high profile online poker players of the olden days have re-emerged this year with strong showings in various live and online poker events. Jason Mercier was one of them, but his fellow PokerStars pro, Daniel Negreanu, had an even better 2013 thus far. He kicked it all off by winning the first ever WSOP APAC Main Event, and pocketing one of the first WSOP bracelets awarded Down Under. He continued his year in high fashion, finishing 4th in the EPT’s Monte Carlo Grand Final and making the final table of the WPT’s Championship event at the end of last week.
Even though the above run is indeed a rather spectacular one – even for a player of Negreanu’s caliber – the achievement which left even him awestruck came just the other day, at PokerStars’ online tables where Kid Poker finally managed to win a major tournament.
The event was the SCOOP’s $5k PLO Six-Max event, which saw 180 players belly up to its tables. The victory took Negreanu’s tournament profits for 2013 above the $1.8 million mark.

Given the hefty buy-in for the event, the field that Negreanu had to overcome on his way to the top was a pretty stiff one: Ike Haxton, Shaun Deeb, Jason Mercier, Justin Bonomo and Steven Chidwick all played, but none of them managed to make the final six.
At the final table, KidPoker took on a selection of unknown online poker players but mixed-in there were a couple of “name” pros: Joe Ebanks and Russell Carson. Carson busted out in 6th place, picking up $40.5k while Ebanks made it to 4th place, taking home $76.5k for his efforts. The player Negreanu had to defeat heads-up was an Austrian known by the online moniker FA_Morgoth. Negreanu’s reward was $216k.
