The Poker Grapevine – Nevada’s Poker Tax

With legal online poker inching closer and closer to reality in the state of Nevada, another major legal step may have been undertaken the other day: Gaming Control Board Chairman AG Burnett submitted Nevada Senate Bill 9 to the Senate Committee on Judiciary. The bill is aimed at taxing revenues generated from the entry fees of online poker tournaments. It has been clear from the beginning that once legalized, online poker revenues would be subject to taxation. The confusing factor is that revenues generated from poker tournaments hosted by brick-and-mortar gambling establishments aren't subjected to similar taxes. According to Burnett, tournaments hosted in live casinos involve extra costs on the part of the organizers, expenses which online poker operators do not incur. It is therefore fair to expect them to pay taxes on their tournament revenues.

In other news: the Global Poker Index’s new Player of the Year leader is Mike Watson. Watson has made no fewer than three final tables in first five weeks of the year. Initially, it was Dan Shak who grabbed the top spot, but his reign turned out to be a short one. Shak has now dropped down all the way to fifth place. Mike Watson's was the most spectacular rise in the rankings: he gained a total of 10 positions, clinching the lead with 342.96 points. Vladimir Troyanovskiy also climbed two positions, right into second place. His rise was no doubt due to the two PCA High Roller deep finishes that he managed to log recently. Bryn Kenney is the one sitting in third currently, followed by Ole Schemion in fourth.
The one to register the biggest climb within the top 10 was Tim Reilly, who gained 103 positions to land in sixth place. Michael Mizrachi and Micah Rashkin made the top 10 as well.
