The poker grapevine – online poker’s staunchest opponent to retire

One of legal online poker’s staunchest opponents, Sen. Jon Kyl has announced a couple of days ago that he would not run for re-election. Kyl is best known among poker players for his support of the 2006 UIGEA, and for various other attempts of his to undermine the efforts of those aiming to have the UIGEA repelled in one form or another. Kyl told Arizona’s ABC15 that upon his retirement he would still retain some role in politics, but he would mainly resume his activities to supporting other candidates and to raising campaign funds.

In other news: in the wake of the Bwin-Party Poker merger, Ongame may become a surplus asset and as such, it may be sold to provide funds for other investments. The merger is likely to be completed at the end of this quarter, although according to a Bwin spokesman, the companies weren’t in a rush to get rid of the poker network. The logic behind a possible waiting period would be that a potential change on the US legal front in the matter of online poker would maximize the value for the shareholders. The deadline for the sale has not yet been set.

491 players coughed up the £500 buy-in for the UKIPT’s Main Event at the Dusk Till Dawn Club in Nottingham the other day. The day 1A field was mostly comprised of amateurs and local pros, but a few “name” players showed up as well: Liv Boeree, David Wamplew and Kevin MacPhee were among the registrants. The second flight of the first day is still to come, so it’s way too early to properly assess the size of the eventual starting field.

The WPT is back on television. Kimberly Lansing will be the show’s new anchor, and Tony Dunst will handle the Raw Deal segment, which deals with the analysis of the action. The show will feature a new theme music, new player stats and four-color decks.
