The Poker Grapevine – Partouche Poker Tour Guarantee Controversy

The Partouche Poker Tour, which is currently underway in the Palm Beach Casino in Cannes, on the French Riviera, has generated quite a bit of controversy the other day, when organizers announced that the Main Event would feature a €4.3 million guarantee instead of the previously announced €5 million one. The online poker world exploded with indignation and revolt. Many players took to their twitter accounts to express their displeasure with the move, while others hit a popular poker forum to discuss it there and to bring various bodies of evidence against the claims launched by Maxime Masquelier, head of the PPT. According to Masquelier, the €4.3 million guarantee represented an excellent deal for players who had paid €8.5k to take part in the event. Masquelier also said that the €5 million guarantee was never given out in writing, a fact disputed by many players and fans in various forums and on twitter.
Justin Bonomo tweeted a picture of an old ad of the event, in which the €5 million guarantee was featured. He did add though that it was extremely difficult to find ‘proof’ from official PPT sources. Peter Jetten on the other hand went further and said that one of the PPT executives had told him that the €5 million guarantee was nothing but a marketing trick.

Meanwhile, Day 2 of the Partouche Poker Tour’s Main Event rolled on, with 489 players at the tables at the beginning of the day. Numerous ‘name’ players busted on Day 2 too, among them Tom Dwan, Robert Mizrachi, Jason Mercier, Pius Heinz, Vanessa Selbst, Patrik Antonius, Juha Helppi and Taylor Paur. The previous champion of the event, Sam Trickett, the ISPT’s freshly hired representative, busted out as well. 122 players remained in the books at the end of the day, among them the provisional chip leader, Paul Tedeschi, who managed to build a stack of 384.2k chips. Kyle Julius finished 6th for the day.
