The Poker Grapevine – Patrik Antonius’ Heads-up Challenge

Patrik Antonius, he of Full Tilt fame, signed a sponsorship deal with iGame a while ago, thus becoming the first Full Tilt pro to officially abandon the failing brand. His iGame sponsorship deal included a challenge, in which Antonius would have to face an amateur player, slugging it out heads-up for a prize of €20k. The amateur who got to take on the Finn was an online iGame qualifier, Rui Faria from Portugal. The rules of the promotion stipulated that in order to take down the whole €20k prize, Faria would have to win two consecutive
NL Holdem heads-up bouts against Antonius. If he lost one and won one, he would walk away with €5k. If he lost both matches, he still wouldn’t go home empty-handed: he’d be rewarded with a €2k VIP package.
Eventually, the two only played one match which Antonius won handily. After he showed up about a half an hour late, Antonius brought the bout to a quick conclusion, after just 81 hands.
In the final hand of the confrontation, a flop of 5d,3s,2d fell. Eventually, all the chips went into the middle on the flop, as Faria had a Qs, 5s against Antonius’ Ad, 10d. The Kc on the turn didn’t change much, but the 3d on the river gave Antonius a flush and the victory. There wasn’t a second match: Faria picked up his €2k consolation prize and Antonius returned to the live tables.
In other news: French conglomerate Groupe Bernard Tapie are apparently going ahead with their ISPT (International Stadiums Poker Tour) plans despite the fact that they weren’t able to acquire Full Tilt Poker as planned. Although there’s generally not much to be heard about the ISPT, every now and then some bits of information are dropped. The latest such information concerns the recruitment of Michael Mizrachi, who will apparently act as the official ambassador of the ISPT. The ISPT’s first event is set to take place at the Wembley Stadium in London in May 2013.
