The Poker Grapevine – Phil Ivey Tops GPI POY List

Phil Ivey’s WSOP 2012 antics haven’t gone unnoticed by the poker community and by the various authorities in charge of creating all sorts of rankings, player of the year lists and awards. The Global Poker Index is quite possibly the most prestigious such organization, and thus far its own PoY list was dominated by Jonathan Duhamel. Following his 5 WSOP cashes through, Phil Ivey finally managed to dethrone him the other day, shooting up 9 straight positions to grab the top spot. Exactly how much this means in practical terms and exactly how much players appreciate such honors is unclear, what’s quite obvious though is that Phil Ivey has certainly managed to revive his career – faded into the background at one point – and he’s now back in the limelight where he belongs.
Although he hasn’t yet managed to take down a bracelet this year, Ivey has come pretty close to it, finishing second in the $10k PL Holdem Championship event. Duhamel slid to 2nd place on the GPI list, while Bertrand Grospellier climbed 3 spots from 8th to 5th.

In other news: one after the other, Las Vegas based live gambling interests take steps to position themselves for the eventual legalization and regulation of online gambling. Fertitta Interactive, the company behind Station Casinos and the UFC has announced the creation of Ultimate Gaming, a company which will focus on real money online social gambling. Poker will obviously be a major focus for the company: as a matter of fact, the first product to be launched by Ultimate Gaming will be Ultimate Poker, which will take to Facebook today. Ultimate Poker will offer play money games for the time being. According to Fertitta Interactive’s Tom Breitling, his company is perfectly positioned to acquire a major following not only in the US but throughout the world.
Fertitta are among the companies who have applied for a Nevada online poker license.
