The Poker Grapevine – Rettenmaier and Shak to Play in Premier League

The lineup of
PartyPoker’s Premier League VI has been shaping up nicely over the last few weeks and now two new big names have just joined the roster: Marvin Rettenmaier and Dan Shak. None of these two players need any formal introduction for
online poker and poker fans. Shak calls poker his hobby and he has around $5 million in tournament earnings to prove that he is indeed pretty good at exercising his favorite pastime.
Rettenmaier on the other hand is the definition of the poker pro: he is the only back-to-back WPT champion and he nearly managed to take down his 3rd title about a week ago.
Last week, Jonathan Duhamel has also confirmed his Premier League showing, so the roster is now at 11, 5 short of the 16-player mark.
Only a few of the already confirmed players will be first-timers in the $125k event. Phil Hellmuth is one of them. Other players who will take part are Daniel Negreanu, last season’s Champion Scott Seiver, Antonio Esfandiari, Luke Schwartz and of course PartyPoker’s own Tony G.
In other news: Asia in general and China in particular have been hailed as the markets to provide the next big online poker boom, but frankly thus far few of the predictions in this respect have materialized. Certainly, there have been a few positive signs, like the first ever WPT event held on Chinese soil, but the hurdles are too numerous presently and most of the problems can be traced back to the rather inflexible legal framework surrounding the game.
The latest attempt to spread poker to mainland China is a rather ambitious VIP club, called the “Goldfish Club”. While everything seems in place about the operation, there’s just one glitch: winnings cannot be cashed out.
