The Poker Grapevine – Schleger Denied Entry to Canada

Being a Team PokerStars pro does not guarantee one special treatment at the Canadian border. That is the lesson
PokerStars’ Shane Schleger learned at the US-Canada border this week, the hard way. The poker pro got stopped, and in his own words “Humiliated and nonplussed” on account of a 12-year old weed-related misdemeanor. Schleger’s problems are much farther-reaching than the humiliation he suffered at the border though: he plays
poker online for a living, and by being denied entry to Canada, he was just denied the possibility to exert his profession, something that even indicted criminals have apparently been allowed to do under bail.
By being forced to return to the US, Schleger probably missed the chance to play in the WCOOP. He usually plays online from Mexico though, and given that Mexican border guards are a lot more likely to show lenience for him (if not otherwise, than in exchange for a palmed Benjamin), he will probably be back at the online tables in no time at all.
The interesting thing about Schleger’s border ordeal was the fact though that a month before the incident he had actually been allowed in under the same conditions. The choices he was presented with upon the denial of his entry were to talk to a judge and to thusly appeal the decision of the border agents, or to come back and try again in 2015.
In other news: Phil Hellmuth is apparently feeling on top of the world lately, which is just great indeed. He fired up a tweet a couple of days ago, basically saying that he felt like a superhero, with no bad guys to tackle – at the poker table, we assume. He also said he could hardly wait to spend 3 days in Las Vegas as part of a planned vacation and then to head to London and Paris for poker tournament action.
