The Poker Grapevine: WSOP Main Event on Break

With the 2014 WSOP Main Event on an effective break following the setting of the November 9, and with the re-launch of the green felt hostilities more than 3 months away, it is time to take a closer look at the final table, and to try to find something newsworthy about a motley but rather un-interesting group of players who make this task quite difficult indeed.
This year, the 9-handed final table of the WSOP turned out to be an extra-lukewarm one. In exactly what ways could the 2014 November Nine have been better than it turned out to be? First of all, there isn’t a single female player at the final table, nor is there a Phil Ivey or Daniel Negreanu-caliber pro, to capture the attention of the press. The rags-to-riches story of Chris Moneymaker isn’t one that’s likely to be replicated by this year’s November 9 either.
One of the players managed to return to the final stages of the competition for the second year in a row, and that’s about all the side-story material one can dig up on them. Still, it has to be said that watching them battle down to the $10 million top prize will be quite a rush for all poker fans.

In other news: everyone involved in poker and online gambling knows about Sheldon Adelson and about his crusade against the activity. Adelson, a gambling billionaire himself, has vowed to spend as much as it takes to nip all the efforts aimed towards legalizing online poker and gambling in the US in the bud. Apparently though, Adelson is having trouble outspending those lobbying for legal online gaming by quite a daunting margin.
