The Worst Poker Moments of 2012 – Marafioti vs Aguiar

Twitter has been a blessing for many people, and there are folks out there who actually managed to put it to some sort of productive use. Most in the poker world in general though have pretty much only used it for its intended purpose: to pollute the World Wide Web and to take petty quarrels into the lime-light. No one has been better at it than poker pro Matt Marafioti, who has taken to Twitter to express his anger and frustration with his ex-girlfriend Lauren Kling during the
2012 WSOP.
Obviously, we won’t go into any details regarding Marafioti’s vitriol-laden tweets, but we can tell you that they provided as poor a depiction of a poker pro as we’ve seen in years, and we have seen our fair share. The fact that the
poker community in general was glad to engage in the tirade too didn’t cast a particularly favorable light upon the industry either.
Although he has apologized for his above said Twitter adventure, Marafioti didn’t hesitate to continue turning Twitter-based tough-guy posturing into an art-form. The two most prolific tweeters of the poker world, Marafioti and Jonathan Aguiar have even managed to lock horns online – something quite inevitable given the size of the egos and the agility of the tweeting fingers involved. The two even had their Twitter bout spill into real life at one point, in what would turn out to be another speck of shame for the poker industry in 2012.
It happened in the Bicycle Casino, in LA. Having traded Twitter barbs over the course of a few months the two players nearly came to blows on the casino floor, when Marafioti and a friend of his confronted Aguiar. Although bodily injuries and flying fists were avoided in the end, the premises for one of the saddest poker moments of 2012 have successfully been created.
