The Worst Poker Stories of 2012 – Brandon Cantu’s Tirade

When it comes to the worst, most embarrassing and cringe-worthy poker moments of 2012, we simply cannot leave out Brandon Cantu and his post WSOPE 2012 tirade, which gave an entirely new meaning to the phrase “sore loser”.
Cantu has apparently always been known as something of a less prominent Phil Hellmuth, especially in regards to his persecution complex.
The $10k Mix Max event of the 2012 WSOPE triggered an outburst from him which further cemented his “Hellmuthian” reputation.

What basically happened was that Cantu had apparently dominated the final table of the above said event, including the early stages of his heads-up bout with Jonathan Aguiar. The green felt hostilities lasted late into the night though and at one point, the organizers had to close the venue. The move was not a unilaterally taken one: French law requires casino operators to close at 5 AM. The first day of the Main Event was the following day though, and since Aguiar wanted to play in the Main Event, WSOPE tournament director Jack Effel decided to postpone the home dash of the $10k Mix Max event. When the two players returned to action, Aguiar took control and he ended up defeating Cantu for the top prize and the title. Cantu simply could not swallow that. He began ranting about how the decision was geared against him as it had allowed Aguiar to talk to his friends and to adjust his game to better cope with his style.
In a culmination of cringe-worthiness, Cantu also said that the organizers’ move had ruined one of the best performances in WSOP history.

Eventually, his complaints didn’t go unheard. Aguiar agreed to a re-match, which he lost, so Cantu could finally gain solace knowing that he had exacted revenge.
