UKIPT Galway Main Event – Day 1B Report

The Full Tilt Poker-sponsored UKIPT Galway Main Event gave its organizers the jitters at the beginning of its second day 1 flight. Featuring a €1 million guarantee, the event was supposed to attract a starting field of 769 players just to cover its guarantee, and its first Day 1 flight saw only 231 belly up to its tables. On Day 1B however 629 players showed up for the
poker tournament, which meant that the guarantee was not covered, and that a €140k overlay came into the picture, a pretty sweet deal for the players involved indeed, but not such a good payday for the organizers.
The player who finished Day 1B with the largest stack was Damian Porebski, who had 205.2k chips bagged. Despite the larger Day 1B starting field, the overall chip lead was retained by Day 1A chip leader Alan Gold, who finished with 272.7k chips to his name. Porebski had to settle for second overall. Other players who finished with large stacks were Tim Slater and Miklos Soproni.
Slater’s large stack came as the result of a late hand in which he managed to score a double elimination. Three players pushed all their chips into the middle in the said hand: Slater, who had pocket Ks, Felipe Feliciano, who trusted his tournament life to pocket 10s and David Caffrey, who had an Ac, 9c. The flop fell 7d,Js,5s and Slater’s odds skyrocketed. The 10c on the turn shook him, but the Kd on the river handed him the pot for good.
Day 1B saw quite a few “name” competitors belly up to the tables in the beginning. Freshly appointed Full Tilt Poker ambassador Dermot Blain was there, together with Viktor Blom. Neither of the two managed to make it to day 2 though. Blain held on the longer: he bit the dust during the very last level of the day.
