Ultimate Poker is Live in Nevada

Yesterday, we broke news that Ultimate Poker were preparing to deal their first fully legal and regulated
real money online poker hand, and now that we have that milestone behind us, it is time to take a closer look at exactly how Ultimate Poker operates, or is supposed to operate. The experiment is a grand one - make no mistake - and on it may hinge the future of regulated online poker in the US.
It has now been made clear: not only residents of Nevada can play at Ultimate Poker, but just about everyone who is within the state borders. Exactly how the operator will determine that is still something of a mystery, but it has been said that a variety of methods shall be used in combination.
Those on the savvier side of technology know that such systems can easily be circumvented through the use of a virtual private network, but the tech team at Ultimate Poker has that base well covered.
According to poker pro Jonathan Aguiar, the system will be impossible to beat, because it will geo-locate players in several different ways. Verizon may throw a wrench in Ultimate Poker’s plans though: the mobile carrier does not allow its customers to be triangulated. Mac users are also on the outside looking in, due to the fact that no Mac compatible software has yet been released. The company is apparently working on a Mac client already, so that shortcoming should be covered soon.
It will be interesting to see if someone manages to beat the geo-location system used by Ultimate Poker. For the time being, the motivation is just not there, but come the
WSOP and the massive traffic spike the site is expecting during the Series, the temptation will be much bigger.
