WCOOP Day 7: Ryan D’Angelo wins first WCOOP bracelet

Day 7 of the 2009 WCOOP meant a little bit of breathing space for the players involved. After all, there were only two events scheduled set to make two more players happy WCOOP bracelet owners. The first Day 7 event was the $500+$30 NL Holdem Shootout, which crowned player “iCeVeNoM” the champion. By no means was it an easy feat for iCeVeNoM to secure the bracelet and the $91,250 prize though. It took him 16 hours to achieve victory, and there probably wasn’t a boring moment for him during that time. Coin flips are something every tourney winner has to go through, and iCeVeNoM certainly had his share of this necessary evil. His memorable coin-flip happened with only 4 players remaining in contention. Nelson Chain shoved all-in on his pocket 7s, hoping for just this type of coin flip, and he sure got what he wished for when iCeVeNoM called him with A,Q. The flop gave iCeVeNoM an A and Chain was eliminated, his stack promptly added to iCeVeNoM’s. That gave iCeVeNoM a sizeable chip lead going into 3 handed play. Good poker players have a pretty good idea about how much one should rely on luck, but they’d probably agree that in the late stages of an event, getting lucky is a must. iCeVeNoM did just that in the final hand of the event when his pocket 4s went up against dynamoM’s pocket 8s. A 4 landed on the board, giving iCeVeNoM a set and the $91,250 prize.
Victor Ramdin also played in the event and he ended up in 12th place, taking down a meager $1,925 prize. Other notable finishes were those of Shane Schleger (who finished 33rd) and David Sands, who finished 37th.

The $300+$20 8-game event was the second event of the day, and this is where Ryan D’Angelo, known online as g0lfa, claimed his first bracelet of the 2009 WCOOP, together with the $50,250 top prize. The tipping point is his title run was a PLO hand he won against Mark Roland, which offered his stack a boost that later proved to be a crucial one. The money went all in on the flop which gave Roland a set of 3s and D’Angelo an open ended straight draw. The decisive card came on the river, filling D’Angelo’s flush and sending Roland to the rail, tail between legs.

That hand sent g0lfa flying and he eventually took down the title by besting viu-qua-di heads-up. The second place earned viu-qua-di $37,500. He was followed by JohnSmith in 3rd and Aaron Gustavson in 4th.
Other noteworthy finishes in the $320 8-game event were those of Scott Arents (who ended up in 10th), Jason Potter (12th), Raymond Davis (13th), Jerrod Ankenman, Tony Nardi and Bryan Devonshire.
With the WCOOP in full swing, the winners of these events may get a chance to secure another bracelet in the days to come.
