WPT Alpha 8 St. Kitts – Philipp Gruissem Wins (again)

Winning a WPT Alpha 8 title is no small feat, even for some of the best professionals out there. Winning two such titles in a row borders on physical impossibility, but that’s exactly what Philipp Gruissem managed to accomplish the other day, when he pocketed the top prize of the $100k Alpha 8 event of the WPT’s St. Kitts stop. While the title itself was probably more rewarding than anything, the actual prize, which tipped the scales at an impressive $1,086,000, wasn’t something to scoff at either.
A total of 23 players coughed up the $100k buy-in, eventually putting a total of 28 buy-ins into the middle. The end of the first day of action saw 16 players survive. With the money bubble set for 5th place though, there weren’t any guarantees at the beginning of the second day for anyone, not even for the 8 players who made the final table.
Fabian Quoss was the first victim of the final table. Even though he made it pretty deep in the
poker tournament indeed, his 8th place yielded no return, so he was forced to settle for the proverbial wooden spoon. The same fate befell Isaac Haxton and Timothy Adams, who finished 7th and 6th respectively.
The first one to take money home from the event was 5th place finisher Scott Seiver. Bounced by Gruissem, Seiver took home $217.2k for his efforts. The next one to go was Jason Koon, following a coin-flip which he lost with an A,K against Mike McDonald’s pocket 9s. Koon’s reward was $298.7k.
McDonald was the next one to be pushed out of the way: his 3rd place finish was worth $434.5k. His elimination set up the heads-up stage of the tournament between Gruissem and Tom MacDonald. Gruissem held the lead and he drove his edge home after just 26 hands. The reward of the runner-up was $679k.
