WPT Alpha8 London – Philipp Gruissem Wins

Germans have been dominating the live tournament high roller scene this year, and Philipp Gruissem’s recent win in the WPT’s £100k Alpha8 London only came to confirm that trend. The scene of the action was the Palm Beach on Mayfair, and the opposition was a tough nut to crack indeed. Tobias Reinkemeier – himself a German – was involved at the top of the pops too.
Gruissem’s reward was a massive £862.4k prize, fully deserved after the heads-up battle he had weathered against high stakes specialist Scott Seiver.
Seiver walked away with a good chunk of the prize-pool too: his share of the loot was £509.6k. Reinkemeier finished 3rd for £352.8k, while Igor Kurganov had to settle for 4th and the £235.3k that came with it.
A total of 19 players had bought into the
poker tournament, but by the beginning of the second day, only 11 of them were left standing. With registration still open, Bill Perkins decided to join the 11, probably attracted by the favorable odds. The prize-pool was indeed almost £2 million, and one only had to beat 11 others to get to the top.
The first one to bite the dust on Day 2 was Steven Silverman. He was followed to the rail by Talal Shakerchi, after which it was Perkins’ turn to get more closely acquainted with the sidelines.
Viktor Blom was the one who sent him packing. Perkins pushed his last chips into the middle on an A,6o, and Blom called him with an A,Ko.
Fabian Quoss’ elimination set up the final table.
Blom was eliminated in 8th place, followed by Richard Yong and Max Altergott. Tony G became the bubble-boy of the event when he was bounced in 5th place by Gruissem, whose pocket Qs got the better of Tony G’s pocket 7s.
