WPT Baden – Day 1A Report

The 11th season of the WPT saw its Baden Main Event kick off on Tuesday, with 104 players coughing up the €3.3k buy-in in the first day 1 flight of the re-entry tournament. A total of 8 levels of action went into the day, at the end of which Kimmo Kurko emerged with the chip lead. Kurko had a decent start to his day and during level 2, after he picked up major pot from Corbin White, that decent start turned into an excellent one.
The hand started out as a classic coin-flip: Kurko had pocket 9s against White’s A,K before the flop and he called a three-bet with them to see another 9 fall on the river. Luckily for him, another K fell as well, which gave his opponent a reason to push all-in. Kurko made the call and he sent Corbin to the rail, picking up the goods.
Kurko continued in pretty much the same note: later, during level 4, he picked up yet another massive pot, this time from Thomas Butzhammer. The chips went into the middle before the flop, as Butzhammer had an Ah, 10h against Kurko’s pocket Ks. The board didn’t help Butzhammer and Kurko scored another elimination.
The first few levels of the
poker tournament saw several “name” players bite the dust. Artem Litvinov was among them, together with Michael Sax and Christian Golob. Litvinov’s bust came during the very first level of play, when he ran head-first into Jan Bendik’s straight.
Lukas Berglund was having a field-day in the meantime. He managed to get Gad Morgenstern all-in, holding pocket rockets against the latter’s pocket Ks. The rockets held and Berglund doubled up handily. He then locked horns with Salman Behbehani and he sent him to the rail as well. Marvin Rettenmaier and Steve O’Dwyer were both among the survivors.
