Sunday was the last day of the WPT’s Baden Main Event. The €3.3k
poker tournament saw an initial starting field of 254 players belly up to its tables. By Sunday though, only 6 of them were left standing, nurturing hopes for victory. The player with the eyes of the press on him was Marvin Rettenmaier, whose possible win would’ve made him only the third player ever to attain 3 WPT titles.
The official short-stack of the final table was Grzegorz Wyraz, who was thus forced to attempt to get something going early at the final table. As expected, his first all-in would lead to the first elimination of the final table: he pushed his last chips into the middle on a pair of 5s and he got a call from an opponent who had pocket 6s. The board failed to help him out and he bit the dust, collecting $47.8k for his 6th place.
The next elimination was a true shocker: Marvin Rettenmaier got his chips into the middle with a K,Qo against Kimmo Kurko’s Ac, Qc. The turn did give the German an open-ended straight, but the river dashed his hopes and he hit the rail in 5th place, picking up a $59.4k prize.
Kurko was the next player to be bounced from the final table. His reward was $81k. The first player to break into 6-figure territory was 3rd place man Oswin Ziegelbecker, who took home $111.5k for his efforts. The heads-up stage of the tournament saw Paul Berende lock horns with Vladimir Bozinovic. Berende came pretty close to snatching the title at one point, but a lucky card saved his opponent, giving him the chip lead. From that point, Bozinovic took over and he eventually drove home the deal, his As,9s getting the better of Berende’s Ac, 8c in the final hand of the tournament.
