WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star – Day 2 report

The second day of the WPT’s Bay 101 Shooting Star saw the field make great headway towards the eventual conclusion. Of the 415 initial starters, 170 returned to the tables on Day 2. By the end of the day, only 24 players were left in contention. Joris Springael finished the day with the largest stack, but perpetual WPT fixture Vivek Rajkumar was also right there near the top.
Among the 170 who returned to action at the beginning of the day, there were no fewer than 19 shooting stars. Phil Hellmuth, Chris Ferguson, Mike Matusow, Howard Lederer and Jason Mercier were all there.
Of the shooting stars, Hellmuth was the first one to be eliminated, at the hands of Vivek Rajkumar, in a pretty typical manner too. Hellmuth got it all-in holding A,K and he got a call from Rajkumar who had A,10. Lady Luck once again decided to thumb her nose at the Brat though, and the first card to hit the board, a 10, gave Rajkumar a lead which Hellmuth couldn’t catch up with.
Mercier’s exit was even worse though. He too got his chips in well, holding Ac, Kc against an opponent’s 6,5o. The board did give Mercier a pair of aces, but it gave his opponent a two pair on the river to send him to the rail and his $5k bounty into his opponent’s pockets.

The most important milestone of the day was the bursting of the money bubble, set for 45th place. Layne Flack was the one unfortunate enough to push everyone else into the money through his own demise.
Flack had pocket Js against an opponent’s A,K and a K fell on the river to seal his fate. Jennifer Harman and John Juanda finished in the money, but failed to make it past the day. Kevin MacPhee and Galen Hall are still in contention.
