WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star – Day 2 Report

255 players returned to the tables on the second day of the WPT’s Bay 101 Shooting Star. The main objective of the day was of course the reaching of the money-bubble. Set for 63rd place, quite a few players had to bite the dust before the remaining survivors could breathe a sigh of relief, certain that they wouldn’t have to go home empty-handed.
Given the pro-heavy nature of the field, it was inevitable that numerous high-profile players would go home empty-handed nonetheless. Indeed, players like John Juanda, Jason Mercier, Greg Mueller, Dominik Nitsche, Jonathan Duhamel and Jennifer Harman bit the dust early on Day 2. As the crowd swelled on the rail, former WPT champions like Eugene Katchalov, Jonathan Little, JC Tran, Barry Greenstein and Andy Frankenberger joined them and that was when the money bubble wasn’t even on the horizon yet.
As the key milestone of the poker tournament drew closer, even more “name” players were bounced: Nick Schulman and David Chiu lost their tournament lives too. Chiu got his last chips into the middle with an A,Qo against another player’s pocket Qs. The board fell blanks only and Chiu was done for the day.

With the money-bubble upon them, Bertrand Grospellier and Scott Seiver were struggling along on short-stacks, looking to somehow stave off elimination for a few more hands. Eventually, they both made the money, because going home in 64th place, with the bubble-boy title of the event, was Jeremy Druckman.
Druckman’s final hand saw his pocket 8s go up against Carlos Mortensen’s pocket Ks. Obviously, he never stood a chance. Following his elimination, several more people busted, leaving only 44 survivors at the tables at the end of the day. The player who finished with the largest stack was Paul Volpe.
