WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star – Day 3 report

The 3rd day of the WPT’s Bay 101 Shooting Star event is in the books and the official (televised) final table is set. 24 players showed up at the beginning of the day, and when the dust settled, there were only 6 left. Steven Kelly leads the survivors into the final stretch, with a stack of 4.1 million chips. The 3rd day of action began in a rather auspicious manner: eliminations started flowing immediately and soon, chip leader Joris Springael was eliminated too, in a classic coin-flip of a race, by Steven Kelly. Kelly had pocket 9s against Springael’s A,K on a board which failed to hit either hand involved. The start of the day chip leader hit the rail in 10th place, giving Kelly enough of a thrust to clinch the chip lead.

Given the high-profile nature of the event and the starting field, the fact that several “name” players made the televised final table didn’t really come as a surprise for anyone. Mike Matusow was one of these players. Mike Sexton and Vivek Rajkumar also made it to the final table.
The final table presence is a true Godsend for Matusow, who has been flying under the radar – through no intention of his own though – lately, as far as tournament poker is concerned. He has “barely” cashed since 2009, thus whatever happens in the Bay 101 Shooting Star, he will probably score his biggest cash of the last couple of years.
The Mouth was the one who set the final table by pushing Ty Reiman out of the way in 7th. His pocket Qs caught another Q on the turn against Reiman’s pocket 10s to burst the final table bubble and to offer all the other survivors the chance to get on television.
Casey McCarrel and Alan Sternberg round up the final 6. Mike Sexton is the official short-stack with 363k chips.
