WPT Bay 101 Shooting Stars – Alan Sternberg wins

The final table of the WPT’s Bay 101 Shooting Stars event was as star-studded as ever. Mike Sexton was there, albeit on a short stack, together with Vivek Rajkumar and Mike Matusow. Having kicked off on Friday, the final table action lasted all the way to the wee hours of Saturday and in the end all the above listed pros were denied, by Alan Sternberg who picked up a bunch of bounties and the $1,039,000 top prize.

Sexton was the official short-stack going into the final stretch of the action. He managed to hold on for a while, but he couldn’t hold off the inevitable and he hit the rail in 6th place, becoming the first casualty of the televised final table.
Mike Matusow was the one responsible for his elimination, so he pocketed the $5k bounty. Casey McCarrel was the next one to fall. He got into a preflop tussle holding Ah, Qh and he eventually shoved all-in on it against Steven Kelly’s J,10o.
The flop gave Kelly a pair of 10s and nothing else fell to save McCarrel, who joined Sexton on the sidelines.
The next crucial hand saw Rajkumar’s K,Jo go up against Kelly’s K,Qo. The board didn’t improve either hand involved and Rajkumar was eliminated too.
Matusow was the one to follow, disposed of in 3rd place by Alan Sternberg. Sternberg had K,Q against Matusow’s 9,2o and the flop gave both players a pair, only Sternberg’s was one of Qs and Matusow’s of deuces.

The heads-up stage began with Kelly enjoying a marginal lead on Sternberg. The two jockeyed around for a while, knowing all too well that any all-in move would completely eat up both stacks involved. The final hand saw Kelly’s A,Q go up against Sternberg’s 10s, 8s. The flop was Q,8,7 and Kelly’s grasp on the title appeared to be tightening. Another 7 fell on the turn and the 8 on the river gave the pot and the win to Sternberg.
