On Sunday, the WPT’s Borgata Poker open kicked off with it first day 1 flight, which saw a massive starting field of 376 players belly up to the tables. A total of 8 levels of action went into the day, at the end of which only 180 players remained standing. The one who clinched the chip lead was Cong Pham, who finished the day with 191k chips to his name. Besnik Ziba had a good day too: he had 183.3k chips bagged. Ziba was followed by Thomas Campbell with 181k chips.
Pham’s rise to the top happened during the 5th level of the
poker tournament, when he managed to take down a massive pot from a 3-way hand. The cards on the table were 8c,8h, 5h, when all three players (Pham and two others) got their stacks into the middle. It turned out that Pham had a pair of 5s in the pocket for the boat, while the other two guys had an 8 each for the three of a kind. The 7h peeled off on the turn, followed by the 4c on the river, and Pham was victorious. Having clinched the chip lead, he never relinquished it till the end of the Day 1A hostilities.
Cherish Andrews had a good day too, but he didn’t shoot into the top 10 until towards the end of the day, when he managed to make a boat on the river to take down a massive pot. He eventually finished in 7th place, with 152k chips to his name. In the hand in which he ended up making the boat, he had a top pair on the flop and a two pair on the turn, before getting there.
Eric Baldwin finished the day in 8th place. Others who survived on healthy stacks were Cliff Josephy, Allen Kessler and Christian Harder.
