WPT Borgata Poker Open – Day 1B Report

The second Day 1 flight of the WPT’s Borgata Poker Open set a record for participation. No fewer than 853 players bellied up to the tables on Day 1B, rounding the total starting field up to 1,313 players.
143 of the players who had busted out on Day 1A chose to re-buy and re-entered the action on Day 1B. For some of these guys, the re-buy turned out to be a waste of money, for others, it proved to be a brilliant investment. Jeff Madsen, himself one of the Day 1A victims, managed to clinch the chip lead on Day 1B. Madsen amassed a stack of 216.9k chips, falling only a step behind Day 1A’s leader, Abe Korotki. Madsen picked up the $5k reward offered to end of the day chip leaders by the WPT.

The pot that propelled Madsen into the lead came about during level 3: two opponents got all-in with Madsen on a flop of 10,10,9 rainbow. It was quite clear that everyone had something solid in this hand, and indeed, Madsen’s two opponents tabled 10,8o and J,10o respectively. Madsen had them both on the ropes though with his pocket 9s which had flopped a boat. The Ad fell on the turn and the 7h on the river to seal Madsen’s win, who thusly managed to send two opponents to the rail in one move.
The Defending Champion, Dwyte Pilgrim had busted out of the event on Day 1A, but he too returned for the second day 1 flight. Unfortunately, he failed to pull off a Madsen-like move and he ended up hitting the rail yet again.
Pilgrim shoved all-in on a flop which had given him an open-ended straight draw. His opponent had a set of 10s though, which held up and the reigning champion was once again disposed of. Robert Mizarachi and Maria Ho both survived the day, together with David Williams and Matt Affleck. 541 players survived Day 1B.
