The WPT’s
PartyPoker-sponsored Canadian Spring Championship wrapped up the other day in Montreal, with Amir Babakhani’s victory. The scene of the action was the Playground Poker Club which saw 6 players return to its tables on the final day of the
poker tournament. Babakhani was the one who started the final table with the chip lead, but in the beginning he took a back seat, allowing the two short-stacks, Martin LeBlanc and Jonathan Bardier to go at it hammer and tongs. During the first level of action, both of them managed to stay alive, but then they locked horns and Bardier ended up crippled. He had an A,10o against LeBlanc’s K,Qo. A K fell on the river and LeBlanc gave himself another chance at staying afloat by doubling up. Not surprisingly, Bardier became the first victim of the final table. He picked up $81.76k for his efforts. Babakhani was the one who eventually swooped in and finished him off for good.
The chips he had taken off Bardier failed to get LeBlanc anywhere: he was the next player to bite the dust. He hung in there for a while but at one point his stack dipped to about 80k chips. Babakhani then moved in for the kill, scoring his second elimination of the final table.
Tao Liang fell in 4th place, sent to the rail by Jason Duval. Duval himself was the next player to fall, eliminated by Babakhani when his open-ended straight draw failed to fill up. He picked up a little over $199k for his efforts.
At the start of the heads-up action, Babakhani enjoyed a handy chip advantage over Barry Kruger. The bout lasted for more than an hour as Kruger managed to stay alive against the odds. Eventually, he hit a cooler though and it was all over. The last hand of the event saw Babakhani’s 8,5o best Kruger’s 5h, 4h.
