WPT Doyle Brunson Five Diamond – Day 1 Report

The 2013 edition of the WPT’s Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic kicked off on Friday, with a star-laden starting field of 322 players bellying up to the tables. The player who finished the day with the largest stack was Kevin Eyster, who built a stack of 238.9k chips. Eyster’s was far and away the largest stack: second place man Allen Pock had only 155.9k chips bagged. Danny Hannawa and Jeff Madsen finished with decent-sized stacks too. Don Nguyen made the top 10 as well, together with Rick Lowe and Brock Parker.
Considering the number of “name” pros who entered at the beginning of the 5 levels which comprised the first day, it was in fact rather surprising to see only this many notables make the top 10. PokerStars’ Daniel Negreanu was there, together with Chino Rheem, David Sands, Eli Elezra, Scotty Nguyen and Eric Baldwin. All these players survived the first day without any hiccups, unlike Antonio Esfandiari, the 2010 champion of this event, who got bounced and was forced to re-buy in order to remain in contention. A similar fate befell Dan Shak and Faraz Jaka.

It didn’t take Esfandiari long to waste his first bullet either: his initial stack was gone during the second level. The chips went into the middle on a flop of Qh,7d,6h, and Esfandiari then showed a K,Q for the top pair and decent kicker. The other player involved in the pot had a 7h, 4h though, for the 4-card flush. The Qc which fell on the turn gave Esfandiari a massive lead, but the 8h on the river undid all that, giving the other guy a flush and sending the Magician packing. He re-bought though and now he’s back in the mix, looking to make the final table the way he did in 2011 and 2012 too.
