WPT Doyle Brunson Five Diamond – Day 2 Report

Saturday saw 5 more levels of the WPT’s Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic go into the books. Jeff Madsen was one of the players who started the second day of the poker tournament with a large stack, and indeed, by the time the day was called, he managed to take over the lead: he finished with 388.4k chips, as about 145 players were left standing. With the re-buy period finally over, Day 2 made the numbers game clear: a total of 449 buy-ins went into the middle, coming from 309 players.
216 of these players chose not to take advantage of the re-buys (or didn’t need to), while 62 of them bought in twice. There were some who pretty much abused the system, buying in three, four, five and even six times. 22 players bought in thrice, 6 put four buy-ins into the middle, and 2 bought in six times. There was even a player who put 7 buy-ins into the prize-pool.

Joseph Cheong was one of the two players who bought in 6 times. He eventually managed to remain in contention, although his 12k chips aren’t likely to carry him far come Day 3.
The player who set the record with 7 buy-ins, was Brian Rast. Rast managed to survive day 2 too, with a stack of 100k chips, so he may yet end up recovering some of his invested money.
With 45 places paid though, he still needs to survive around 100 opponents just to make the money.
One player who had a great Day 2 was Jean Robert Bellande, who started off with 20.2k chips, and dropped down as low as 7k before mounting a comeback. He finished with a healthy stack of 218.1k chips.
Phil Laak, Phil Hellmuth and Mukul Pahuja were all eliminated on Day 2.
