WPT Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic – Dan Smith Wins

The final day of the WPT’s Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic saw 6 players return to the tables. Every one of these players was guaranteed a 6-figure payout, and given that they were all notables and skilled pros, it’s safe to say not one of them wanted anything less out of the last day than outright victory. The only one who got there though was Ivey’s pro, Dan Smith, who took down the first-place prize of $1.16 million, becoming the only player to walk away from the
poker tournament with a 7-figure prize.
The player Smith bested for the top spot and the top prize was Gary Benson, whose second place was good enough for $672.6k.
Eddy Sabat made it all the way to third, picking up a $436.1k reward.
The first victim of the final day bit the dust 21 hands into the home stretch showdown. Joe Serock may have once been the WPT’s Player of the year, but on this occasion his best was only enough for 6th place and a $175.7k reward, not a bad haul in itself, but rather disappointing in view of the possibilities.
The second one to head to the sidelines was Barry Hutter, who got his chips into the middle on an A,Ko, in a classic coin-flip against Dan Smith’s pocket Ks.
It took quite a bit for the 3rd victim of the day to hit the sidelines. Shaun Suller was eventually sent packing by Eddy Sabat, after his Ad,9d fell to the latter’s pocket Qs.
Eddy Sabat’s final hand saw his A,9o fall to Dan Smith’s Ks,Qs.
When the heads-up action got going, Smith had a 7-1 chip lead over his opponent, Benson, and that advantage proved insurmountable for the latter. The final hand of the tournament saw Benson’s pocket 4s fall to Smith’s K,10o.
